The Ernest W. Beck Fund

Monies from the Ernest W. Beck Fund, established in 1993, are used to underwrite an annual lecture or seminar in ethics or a related topic in the profession of medical illustration.

Ernie, was a tireless, creative and active medical illustrator. He not only illustrated textbooks and surgical atlases, but was an author on five books as well. His professional accomplishments were almost legendary– besides maintaining a busy and successful private practice, he served at different times as Executive Managing Editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and 13 AMA specialty journals, and as Art Director for the G.D. Searle company.

His devotion to the AMI was equally prodigious. He served on the Board of Governors twice and was a member or chairman of numerous important committees. He was chairman of the Journal of Biocommunication Editorial Review Board. He was a Fellow and received the Outstanding Service Award twice. In 1992, he received the AMI’s highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Of all his involvement in AMI activities and the committees he chaired, he was perhaps most proud of his work with the Ethics Committee. Indeed, his efforts as an impartial, reasoned and open-mined arbiter, ombudsman and advisor have had a deep and lasting influence on the professional conduct and relationships between AMI members, their colleagues, employees and clients. It is, therefore, fitting that Ernie not only be honored but remembered in a manner that continues his work and benefits the group he cared so much about.
