Our Leadership

The Board of Trustees

The business and affairs of the Vesalius Trust are managed by the fifteen members of the Board of Directors, informally known as the Trustees. The Trustees serve voluntarily, without compensation or remuneration. They are elected for three year terms. Nominations for election to the Board are made by the Trust’s Executive Committee, who consider: the objective criteria of professional experience, AMI, GNSI, AAA, HeSCA, ABCD or other biocommunications organizational involvement, academic and professional affiliations as well as the intangible qualities of life experience, leadership ability, dedication, commitment, and zeal. Through their actions, the Trustees support the students and professionals in visual communications for the health sciences, but the Trustees act independently of any professional association.

To better recognize the great individual contributions made in the furtherance of the study and effective use of visual communications in medicine and the health sciences by individuals, the Board of Trustees established an additional class of Trustee: Honorary Trustee.

Honorary Trustees enjoy all the rights and privileges of regular Trustees, excepting that they are elected for a term without limit and are not required to attend Board meetings. They do not vote on official business or affairs of the Trust.

In 1994 the Vesalius Trust bestowed Honorary Trustee status on the Charter Members of the Association of Medical Illustrators, in honor of their dedication to art in the service of medicine, and because of their active participation in the establishment of the AMI and their life-long support for the profession.

[learn_more caption=”The Vesalius Trust Advisory Council”]

The goal of the Vesalius Trust is:

“to develop and support research and educational programs in visual communications for the health sciences which it is hoped will lead to improved health care.”

To help assure that the Trust has the benefit of the best advice and counsel as it reaches toward this goal, the Vesalius Trust established an Advisory Council. The Council is comprised of recognized leaders and visionary thinkers from a diverse range of professions, including medical illustration. The Council is a resource of knowledgeable, experienced, and dedicated individuals willing to aid in the development and evaluation of Trust activities.

Council members come from not only biomedical and allied fields, but also from related professions and industries. Physicians, librarians, publishers, computer scientists, educators, archivists, public relations specialists, artists, photographers, and writers have been invited to become members of the Advisory Council. Membership on the Council is by invitation of the Board of Trustees. There are no dues, nor is travel required. The Council is not a fund-raising group.
